Virginie Sermet and I (Kubashni Govender) had the privilege of attending a talk with Alex Brooker, one of the many La Chât guest speakers, on the 21/10/2017.
Alex Brooker is a Journalist, comedian and TV presenter on British television’s Channel 4. He is also a loving husband and father to a gorgeous baby girl.
Alex was born with hand and arm deformities and a twisted right leg which had to be amputated when he was a baby. He now wears a prosthetic leg. He is a fanatical football supporter, specifically Arsenal FC. He attended Liverpool University, which started his career in Journalism. It was his dream to be a sports journalist, however, he found it was not as glamorous as he thought.
Alex moved on to cover the Paralympic World Cup. This was the first time he became conscious of his disability. He had never spent time with disabled people before. He never felt different from his friends and family as they treated him the same as anyone else in their group. He just thought the things he did differently was “quirky”.
At the age of 24, he found the need for a therapist, which shows you how the people around you shape your life. As a differently abled child, a therapist is generally needed a lot earlier in life, however, the people around Alex helped him be him.
Alex then moved on to Channel 4 which posed him with a whole lot of other opportunities;
*Half a Million Quid Talent Search
*The Last Leg
*Alex Brooker, My Perfect Body
Alex also spoke about the awkwardness people in general, disabled or not, feel when interacting with disabled people. It is Human nature to feel awkward around situations you are not comfortable with. Although children have a very different view, they will not shy away and will ask the awkward question and end all awkwardness.
Alex Brooker is a true inspiration to all, as he has achieved so much and still continuing to do more to achieve his dreams and goals.
We will all do well in understanding that we are all differently abled in some way or form.
